US ecommerce giant Amazon has successfully carried out its first drone delivery in the United Kingdom after a package was delivered to an address in Cambridge.

The delivery opens up the prospect of Amazon opening up its drone services to deliver products by air on a larger scale.

Currently only two of its Prime customers can avail themselves of the service as they are the only ones that meet the requirements of having a large garden and a location close to an amazon warehouse, as well as an order which weighs less than 2.6kg.

The package contained a television streaming stick and a bag of popcorn, and the company said that it was a fully autonomous flight with no human pilot.

The Seattle-based company's CEO Jeff Bezos confirmed the news via his Twitter account , when he tweeted "first ever #AmazonPrimeAir customer delivery is in the books. 13 min—click to delivery."

Amazon still faces strict regulations on the operation of autonomous aircraft, although these are slightly more favourable in the UK. It first announced the idea of making deliveries by this method in 2013.

It remains to be seen whether Bezos' company will be able to meet its target of introducing drone delivery as a regular option for its users by 2018.
