Donald Trump's meeting of tech industry leaders at Trump Tower last week was an opportunity not to be passed up, according to Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook.

In an internal letter circulated within the company, and obtained by tech site TechCrunch, Cook said that he was not prepared to stand on the sidelines despite having voiced concern about a potential Trump presidency earlier this year.

The memo discussed various policy issues which affect Apple directly, such as tax reform and renewable energy, adding that "you don't change things by just yelling."

"Personally, I've never found being on the sideline a successful place to be," Cook wrote. "The way that you influence these issues is to be in the arena. So whether it's in this country, or the European Union, or in China or South America, we engage.

Cook also made mention of Apple's push to run its operations on renewable energy, saying that they have reached their goal of operation 100% on clean energy sources. Previously the company had said that it had been operating on around 93% usage.

"Governments can affect our ability to do what we do. They can affect it in positive ways and they can affect in not so positive ways. What we do is focus on the policies."

"They're on advocating for human rights for everyone, and expanding the definition of human rights. They're on the environment and really combating climate change, something we do by running our business on 100 percent renewable energy."
