Apple has teamed up with China UnionPay to bring Apple Pay to China, starting early next year.

The tech giant announced the deal on Friday, with China UnionPay cardholders able to add their bank cards on iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad.

It will be the fifth country the service is rolled out to, following the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

Together with China UnionPay’s QuickPass, the service is set to make shopping convenient and secure.

Apple Pay will be rolled out after relevant tests and certification required by Chinese regulators. Apple said the service already complies with applicable national mobile payment and financial industry standards in China.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services said China is an extremely important market for Apple.

“With China UnionPay and support from 15 of China’s leading banks, users will soon have a convenient, private and secure payment experience.”

China UnionPay’s Chai Hongfeng said the bankcard network is excited to offer Apple Pay among a number of innovative payment options that work with China UnionPay QuickPass.

“China UnionPay is dedicated to promoting payment innovations and providing secure, convenient mobile payment experiences for its hundreds of millions of cardholders, aligning multiple parties in the industry.”
