US tech giant Apple will build three major manufacturing plants in the country , according to President Donald Trump.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Trump said he had held a conversation with Apple boss Tim Cook, who had promised to build three ‘big plants’ in the US.

Trump told the publication he had spoken to Cook about a variety of issues, including tax reforms.

“He’s promised me three big plants - big, big, big,” Trump said.

Apple currently manufactures the majority of its products in China, with only a select few parts of its tech output being made in the US.

The company did not confirm the plans following the release of the interview, but has previously pledged to start a $1bn fund to boost manufacturing in the US.

During the interview Trump also touted National Economic Council director and former Goldman Sachs executive Gary Cohn as a potential successor to Janet Yellen as chair of the Federal Reserve.

“I’ve known Gary for a long time, but I’ve gained great respect for Gary working with him, so Gary certainly would be in the mix,” Trump said.

Yellen’s terms expires in February 2018, but Trump said extending her time in the position was not ruled out.
