Former UK secret intelligence service M16 head Sir John Sawers joined BP as a non-executive director on Thursday.

Sawers left MI6’s top job in November 2014 after holding the position for five years, and will not be the first former intelligence specialist to work for the energy company.

Sawers will bring extensive experience of international affairs and geopolitics

BP’s chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg said Sawers would bring “extensive experience of international affairs and geopolitics”.

A career Foreign Office diplomat, Sawers has extensive experience in the Middle East.

The FTSE 100 oil major also hired Paula Rosput Reynolds, former chief executive officer of Fortune 500 natural gas distributor AGL Resources, into a similar role on the board.

Reynolds is also a current non-executive director of BAE Systems, TransCanada Corporation and Delta Airlines.
