Daimler to cut shifts for 18,500 workers due to chip shortage

Daimler was forced to put up to 18,500 workers in Germany on short-time shifts due to the impact of the global shortage of chips.

According to a statement from the company on Wednesday, the company's plants in Bremen and Rastatt would be affected.

"Currently, there is a worldwide supply shortage of certain semiconductor components," said a spokeswoman. "We continue to play things by ear. The situation is volatile, so it is not possible to make a forecast about the impact," she added.

The move, which would interrupt production at those two factories, but allow employees working on special projects to continue, was to take effect from 23 April.

Nevertheless, the change was only expected to last one week.
