Bosses at Germany's two biggest banks -- Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank -- held talks about a potential tie-up earlier in August, a report says.

However, the pair had, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters, shelved the project.

They wanted to finish their respective restructuring before taking any steps towards a potential merger.

The source said Deutsche Bank chief executive John Cryan and chief financial officer Marcus Schenck were present at the meeting.

Both lenders declined to comment to the news agency.
