Mylan NV, the creators of EpiPen, have announced plans to sell a generic and less expensive version of the product, in response to outrage over its price increases.

The company said that the generic EpiPen would be available in several weeks and it would be identical to the existing product, which is used to treat severe allergic reactions.

Public anger was plain to see after two measures announced by the company to help with the cost of the treatment were deemed insufficient.

It had pledged to increase the assistance it provided to commercially insured patients to help with their out-of-pocket costs, as well as widening the range of those who could receive the product for free.

The list price of $600 remained the same for a pack of two, and Mylan have now succumbed to the outcry by offering the new version for $300 as a wholseale list price.

“We understand the deep frustration and concerns associated with the cost of the EpiPen to the patient, and have always shared the public’s desire to ensure that this important product be accessible to anyone who needs it,” said chief executive Heather Bresch in a statement.
