US tech giant Google is aiming to expand its reach in India, as it announced on Tuesday plans to launch Google Station.

The service will allow the use of public wifi hotspots in heavily populated areas such as shopping centres, cafes and university areas.

Currently 53 train stations in India currently have high-speed internet connections, and the move will bid to increase that number rapidly.

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said in a blog post that it was an ambitious project.

"This will rank it as the largest public Wi-Fi project in India, and among the largest in the world, by number of potential users. It will also be fast—many times faster than what most people in India have access to today," Pichai said.

Plans are also abound to introduce Google Station to Indonesia and the Phillipines, but Pichai said India is a key area for technology development.

"In the past year, 100 million people in India started using the Internet for the first time. This means there are now more Internet users in India than in every country in the world aside from China," Pichai added.
