Car designer Henrik Fisker has confirmed he is returning to the electric car market, and is set to challenge Elon Musk's Tesla in the long-range vehicle industry.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Fisker plans to launch his electric car by the end of 2017. As of yet, there has been no mention of autonomous driving features.

Tesla currently has the longest range electric vehicle on the market, with the recently-upgraded Model S capable of reaching up to 400 miles on a single charge.

"We have really been working in stealth mode," Fisker told Bloomberg.

"We had the strategy of developing the technology as fast as possible without getting tied down to a large organization, which would hold us back. Now we have the technology that nobody else has. And there is nobody even close to what we are doing out there."

Fisker has worked on designs for BMW, Ford, and Aston Martin, but oversaw the bankruptcy of his own firm Fisker Automotive in 2014, and the buying of its assets by the Wanxiang Group.

Fisker's plan is for the the car to lead the way for Fisker Inc. to develop and produce a second, more affordable electric vehicle in the years to come. The hope is for the more affordable one to cost less than $40,000 but still have a longer electric range than competitors.
