Russia has blocked the social network LinkedIn after a court in the country found it to have violated data storage laws.

The communications regulator in Russia, Roskomnadzor, said the Microsoft-owned site would not be available for the next 24 hours as a result of the court's decision.

More than six million people use the network in Russia, where new laws were introduced two years ago to store personal data on their citizens.

LinkedIn have said that they did not agree with the decision and hoped to speak with the regulator in order to arrive at a solution.

"Roskomnadzor's action to block LinkedIn denies access to the millions of members we have in Russia and the companies that use LinkedIn to grow their businesses," a spokesperson said.

"We remain interested in a meeting with Roskomnadzor to discuss their data localisation request."

LinkedIn was acquired by Microsoft in June for $26bn.

Russia has been involved in frequent clashes with US tech giants such as Google and Twitter, and Microsoft itself has been under investigation from antitrust regulators in the country.
