Video streaming service Netflix has answered the prayers of millions of its users by introducing a new feature which allows them to download episodes of series and films so they can watch them when they are not connected to the internet.

Until now, users had to have internet connection to view content, whereas now they will be able to save it and watch it on their way to work or while in the park.

The US company has built up a reputation for securing and even making high-quality content, with such original programming including hits Narcos, Stranger Things and House of Cards.

Director of product innovation Eddy Wu said the move was engineered as a response to demand from those who pay a monthly subscription for a membership.

"While many members enjoy watching Netflix at home, we've often heard they also want to continue their Stranger Things binge while on airplanes and other places where internet is expensive or limited," Wu said.

The feature will be available on both iOs and Android smartphones, tablets and laptops.

"Many of your favorite streaming series and movies are already available for download, with more on the way, so there is plenty of content available for those times when you are offline," he added.

Netflix currently faces tough competition from many other streaming providers, particularly from the likes of Amazon, which is investing heavily by creating its own products. It recently released the first of its The Grand Tour show, featuring former Top Gear presenters Richard Hammond, James May and Jeremy Clarkson.
