Samsung are set to release their new Galaxy Note 7 on August 2, the successor to the Note 5, and the South Korean company have even revealed why they have skipped a number ahead of the device's debut.

“First and foremost though, you might be curious as to why it’s called Galaxy Note7 instead of Galaxy Note 6. There are a couple reasons why. First, the Galaxy Note7 will complement our Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, and unify our product portfolio."

"Second, the Galaxy Note7 will minimize confusion about the latest mobile technology from Samsung, and provide full alignment with Galaxy S smartphone,” Samsung said.

The Note has been referred to as a "phablet", a cross between a mobile phone and a tablet, and the newest version of the technology will be launched at simultaneous events in New York, London and Rio de Janeiro in August.

Various notable improvements are said to be introduced to the Galaxy Note 7, with the inclusion of a Micro SD memory card slot, Samsung having previously come in for criticism for leaving it out of the Note 5 design.

Samsung recently released a new mobile storage format based on UFS 1.0, which is expected to provide read and write speeds that are five times better than conventional microSD cards. However, these new UFS cards are not compatible with the existing microSD card sockets, leading many to speculate that the Galaxy Note 7 might feature a hybrid UFS/microSD card slot.

The device is expected to be aligned with the recently released Samsung Galaxy 7 smartphone, and could well include features from the phone, including a dual curved display.
