Sinovac says that early clinical trial results show that its Covid-19 vaccine candidate may protect people against infections.

A phase two placebo-controlled trial involving 600 patients showed that a shot of its vaccine, dubbed CoronaVac, induced neutralising antibodies in "above 90%" of people tested 14 days after receiving injections, the company said on Saturday.

Another placebo-controlled phase one study with 143 patients was being conducted in parallel.

No severe side effects were reported.

However, reports noted that the company provided few details regarding CoronaVac's efficacy and safety.

Sinovac said it expected to release a report on the phase two study results in the "near future", alongside the submission of a design protocol for a phase trial to the country's regulator.
