Popular social media app Snapchat has made a new foray into politics - by allowing users to register to vote in the US presidential election this year.

In a partnership with nonprofit organisation Democracy Works' TurboVote app, which is used to encourage voter registration, Snapchat aims to encourage more younger people to vote in the upcoming elections.

Traditionally, those between 18 and 34 have quite a low voter turnout, and Snapchat reaches around 41% of that group in the US on daily basis.

"Our country's democracy thrives on participation. But you can't participate unless you register to vote. We hope this effort amplifies our community's voice come November," a Snapchat spokesperson told Mashable.

Several celebrities have joined the cause, contributing videos explaining to millenials the importance of voting.

Jimmy Fallon, Dwayne Johnson and Jared Leto are some of the big names involved with the Snapchat campaign.
