South Korea orders recall of more than 125,000 Volkswagen vehicles

South Korea has ordered the recall of more than 125,000 Volkswagen diesel cars after the government found the car maker had installed emissions-cheating software.

The Ministry of Environment said an investigation into several models including VW’s premium Audi brand showed vehicles used “defeat devices”.

The ministry also ordered the suspension of unsold VW and Audi vehicles and slapped the car maker with a 14.1bn won (£8.2bn) fine.

South Korea is only the second country after the United States to announce measures based on its own testing of the vehicles.

On Wednesday, regulators in California ordered VW to recall around 16,000 diesel vehicles.

Volkswagen admitted in September that it had used emissions-cheating software in up to 11m diesel vehicles worldwide.
