Deutsche Bank´s boss denied the German lender had asked for or queried Chancellor Angela Merkel about possible financial aid.

Fresh equity is "is currently not an issue" and accepting help from Berlin is "out of the question for us", Deutsche Bank chief John Cryan told German weekly Bild in an interview.

Shares in Deutsche Bank, which was in the midst of a restructuring, had come under increased pressure in recent weeks after the US Department of Justice tabled an initial proposal that the lender pay $14bn to settle an investigation into residential mortgage-backed securities.

Its stock had lost more than half their value before Wednesday.

“It was clear from the beginning that we would not pay this sum,” Cryan reportedly said.

“The DOJ will treat us with the same fairness as American banks that have already agreed on a compromise.”

As of 0904 BST shares in Deutsche bank were higher by 2.43% to €10.86.
