Tesla debuted its $39,900 Cybertruck pickup on Thursday but suffered a mishap as one of the windows shattered at the demo.

The truck, which hold certain similarities with futuristic vehicles seen in movies such as Mad Max or Back to the Future, was unveiled in Hawthorne, California.

At the demo, Elon hit the truck’s door with a sledge hammer to show the car’s resistance. He also asked an on-stage companion) to demonstrate the strength of the Tesla “Armor Glass” by throwing a solid metal, baseball-sized ball at the driver side window.

Unfortunately, the window smashed. The glass didn’t completely shatter but it did appear to crack from edge to edge.

“Oh my [bleeping] God,” Musk laughed. “Well, maybe that was a little too hard.”

They tried the test again on the rear passenger window and it also cracked. “Room for improvement,” Musk said jokingly.

Tesla's truck will be sold starting at $39,900 (£30,900), a model which has a range of 250 miles (402km), while the most expensive model, at $69,900, will have a range of 500 miles. The truck will be capable of seating up to six adults and haul a payload of 3,500lbs, Tesla said.

Musk said pre-orders would start immediately, with production set to start in late 2021.
