Elon Musk, the founder and chief executive officer of Tesla Motors, has said that the company will continue to roll out vehicle upgrades, even though some customers have complained that newly-purchased cars will not be equipped with the latest technology.

Tesla has been one of the most innovative car-makers in the US in recent years with its electric vehicles and self-driving technology.

"Tesla will never stop innovating," Musk tweeted on Sunday. "People are buying the wrong car if they expect this. There will be major revs every 12 to 18 months... If we applied resources to doing super complex retrofits, our pace of innovation would drop dramatically."

Most auto manufacturers maintain a base model for five years before a radical change in technology, but Tesla will not be following that trend, according to Musk.

The CEO added that the HW2 upgrade of its self-driving system Autopilot would now be available to those drivers who have cars made after October 2016.

Tesla's plans to expand further in the UK may be affected by price increases attributed to "currency fluctuations", as well as the withdrawal of free charges for users from its Supercharge network.

Increases of 5% were brought in on 15 January, bringing the price of the Model S saloon from £58,955 to £61,902, while the Model X SUV has gone up from £82,055 to £86,157.
