TikTok’s new chief executive Kevin Mayer spoke to EU commissioner Thierry Breton about the fight against disinformation surrounding the popular video app.
The CEO talked to the EU commission on Tuesday in a discussion that revolved around the Chinese-owned app’s drive to work with regulators amid scrutiny from authorities, particularly in the US.
Authorities in Europe and the Western world worry that the video app could be used to push the Chinese government’s censorship ideals. Washington has even launched a national security review into the acquisition of social media music app Musica.ly
EU commissioner Thierry Breton, who is responsible for the bloc’s internal market and shaping digital policy, tweeted that he had a “good conversation” with Mayer.
“TikTok has a role to play against #disinformation, especially in the fight,” he added.
He also urged major platforms to sign up to the EU’s Code of Practice to “address the spread of fake news & improve transparency".
Giants such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Mozilla and Twitter have already signed up.
