Uber allies with start-up Lime to add rentable scooters on app

Uber announced its new partnership with electric scooter startup Lime on Monday which will allow the company to rent out scooters via its smartphone app.

It will promote Lime on the app and stick its logo on the green scooters. Lime said its service is available in over 70 markets in the US and Europe which could also benefit Uber.

Uber invested in Lime as part of a $335m financing round and the move will allow the ride hailing firm to compete with Lyft that last week purchased GoBikes.

Uber chief executive also said last year that the aim was that the company’s app eventually becomes the central place for all kinds of urban transportation.

Uber VP Rachel Holt said, "Our investment and partnership in Lime is another step towards our vision of becoming a one stop shop for all your transportation needs.

“Lime already has an expansive footprint, and we're excited to incorporate their scooters into the Uber app so consumers have another fast, affordable option to get around their city, especially to and from public transit."
