Uber turmoil continues as top executive resigns

A top executive has resigned from US tech company Uber Technologies as the fallout from a damning attorney general report continues.

Emil Michael was Uber's senior vice-president and was known to be one of CEO Travis Kalinick’s closest allies, and departed his position on Monday after he was reported to have been the subject of one part of the report released by US attorney general Eric Holder.

Holder conducted a review of the ride-hailing firm’s practices following revelations earlier this year which included allegations of sexual harassment and mismanagement.

Pressure is growing on Kalinick himself to resign in the wake of the report, which is said to be highly critical of Uber’s employment practices.

Michael is the most high-profile departure from Uber’s executive team in recent weeks, but more may face the spotlight when the company publishes the list of recommendations made by Holder on Tuesday.

Uber has been caught up in a series of PR disasters in the early part of 2017, including a dashcam video which was released showing Kalinick berating one of the company’s drivers.

That incident led to an acknowledgment from Kalinick that he must “fundamentally change” as the boss of the firm.
