US telecommunications giant Verizon is said to be seeking a discount on its $4.83bn deal to buy internet firm Yahoo, after issues in recent weeks surrounding data protection incidents.

The New York Post has reported that Verizon will look for $1bn off the total price as a result of the barrage of bad news for Yahoo.

Two weeks ago, Yahoo admitted to having been hacked in 2014, with details and passwords from 500 million accounts being stolen from what it referred to as a "state-sponsored" entity.

Then, earlier this week, the company once again hit the headlines after complying with a directive from US intelligence agencies to scan and search its users' email accounts for specific information.

The report from The Post quotes a source close to AOL chief Tim Armstrong, who it said was unhappy about the lack of disclosure that was received concerning the scandals.

Verizon agreed to buy the core internet assets of Yahoo's business in July, before it was made aware of the massive data breach.

Former interim boss of Yahoo Ross Levinsohn told CNBC on Wednesday that the terms of the deal are likely to be altered in the wake of the incidents.

"If I'm sitting at Verizon right now, just from a business standpoint, I'd probably reserve a bunch of money against the deal or go back to Yahoo and ask for a discount," Levinsohn said.
