Australia’s former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced his intention to stay in politics.

In a short statement issued on Sunday night, Abbott who was replaced by Malcolm Turnbull in a leadership battle of the ruling Liberal Party in September, said he would contest the seat of Warringah, North Sydney; a constituency he had held for 22 years.

Abbott said he had taken time out to assess his future since losing the leadership and was heartened by the support that he had received from his constituents. “Therefore, I am re-nominating to represent the people of Warringah for another term as their Liberal MP.”

Turnbull has not officially commented on Abbott’s decision to stay on in parliament.
