Incumbent United States president Barack Obama has once again heavily criticised Donald Trump as being unfit to serve as his successor as he campaigned for his opponent, Hillary Clinton.

In a speech made in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Obama devoted the majority of his time on stage to lambasting the New York businessman, explaining that the decision voters will make next week "could not be any more clear".

Trump advanced significantly in polls this week after seemingly falling out of the running following his poor showing in three televised debates.

"This guy is temperamentally unfit to be commander-in-chief, and not equipped to be president," claimed Obama.

"It's strange how over time what is crazy gets normalised...we have to stop thinking that his behaviour is normal, that it's within the bounds of what has been our normal political discourse," the president added.

Obama also made reference to Trump's controversial comments on a leaked Access Hollywood recording.

"Do you want somebody to be your voice who on tape brags about how being famous allows him to get away with sexual assault?"

With just five days to go until election day, the candidates are campaigning ferociously to try to sway the minds of undecided voters, with Trump in Florida and Clinton in North Carolina.
