US carmaker Ford Motor's executive chairman Bill Ford said on Wednesday that he had met with presidential candidate Donald Trump in order to discuss his verbal attacks against the company.

Trump has criticised Ford for expanding production in Mexico at the apparent expense of jobs in the United States.

"Our jobs are fleeing the country. They are going to Mexico," Trump said last week during the first presidential debate. "So, Ford is leaving — thousands of jobs. Leaving Michigan, leaving Ohio. They are all leaving."

Bill Ford said that the two had a productive meeting, but did not divulge further information during a speech at the Economic Club of Washington, DC.

"I've had a very good meeting with him," Ford said. "He's a very good listener and he knows the facts."

The car manufacturer announced last month that it was shifting its production of Focus and C-Max models to plants in Mexico in 2018, bringing 2,800 jobs with it. It said that it would not affect jobs at its Michigan plant.
