Blasts rock St. Petersburg metro

An explosion has rocked a metro station in St.Petersburg, Russia, according to reports.

The blast left several victims at the Sennaya Ploshchad, the BBC reported citing Tass and Interfax.

According to Interfax, an unknown object was allegedly exploded inside a train, with smoke coming out of the station.

The blasts may have claimed the lives of 10 people, according to tentative estimates cited by Interfax.

A total of 50 people were injured, Interfax later reported, citing the St.Petersburg governor's press secretary.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russian president Vladimir Putin had been informed of the attack.

Putin was in the city earlier on Monday but it was unclear whether he remained there.

As of 1325 GMT the US dollar was up by 0.19% against the Russian ruble to 56.35.
