Donald Trump's odds of beating Hillary Clinton to become the next United States president have shortened at leading bookmaker Boylesports.

The controversial New York businessman has gradually clawed back a significant lead held by rival Clinton, and is now rated as a 6/4 chance to win the November election.

Democrat Clinton has gone out to 1/2 from 4/9, according to the bookmaker. A month ago she appeared to be striding to victory, before multiple claims of a lack of transparency in her campaign after revelations about her private emails during her time as Secretary of State, as well as her covering up of her pneumonia diagnosis.

Boylesports' head of communications Leon Blanche said Trump's surprisingly sympathetic attitude towards Clinton's illness may have reaped success.

"Donald Trump has played his main rivals health issues perfectly. He has decided to take the sympathetic stance much to many people's surprise and punters are starting to warm to him. Trump is now 6/4 to become next President, and the Republican party are now 8/5 from 7/4 to win the race to have their candidate elected."

As Clinton's odds lengthen, Blanche attaches blame to her lack of transparency.

"Hilary Clinton has a real battle on her hands and she may want to be a little more forthright with news pertaining to her in the near future. She is now out to 1/2 to win the race."
