A coal power plant in China has collapsed, killing 67 people and leaving many others injured as a platform which was under construction gave way on Thursday.

The accident took pace at a plant in Fengcheng in the eastern province of Jiangxi, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported on Thursday morning. One person remained trapped among the devastation at the factory.

Safety at industrial sites in China has become a growing concern, with lax safety standards and a high numbers of accidents being reported every year.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang told reporters in the country that there would be an investigation into the incident, which he implied could have been avoided.

"Strengthen supervision and preventive measures, prevent such a major accident from happening again," Li is cited as saying on a government website, according to Reuters.

170 people were killed last year in an explosion in the city of Tianjin, with the former secretary with responsibility for workers' safety being dismissed and charged with corruption. This week Yang Yang Dongliang admitted to taking bribes to the tune of $4.12m during his time working for the government.
