Hillary Clinton appears to be clawing back some of her lead that was lost in recent weeks to rival Donald Trump, according to the latest poll from NBC/Survey Monkey on Tuesday.

The Democrat nominee had relinquished most of her advantage over Republican competitor Trump after failing to disclose her diagnosis with pneumonia and accusations of a lack of transparency in her campaign.

However, the latest poll shows that she now has a five-point lead nationally, gaining the support of 50% of likely voters, compared with 45% for Trump.

The New York businessman's campaign has been struggling to shake off a furore surrounding his treatment of the issue of Barack Obama's birthplace, after failing to apologise despite admitting for the first time that the current president was born in the US.

Some of the first votes have already been cast in this year's race for the White House, with several votes holding absentee and early voting rounds.

Bookmakers are still backing the wife of former leader Bill Clinton to triumph, with the general price of around 8/15 available for Clinton and 13/8 for Trump.

The two candidates will face off in a series of television debates before the November election, the first of which will take place next week.
