Hillary Clinton tells her supporters not “to lose heart” and to keep fighting despite her loss today.

“I’m sorry that we did not win this election for the values we hold and vision we share for this country.”

She urged the American public to give her opponent the chance to be a successful president.

“We must accept this result and look to the future. Donald Trump is going to be our president and we owe him an open mind and the chance to lead.”

The ex-Secretary of State also encouraged people to carry on being politically involved not just every four years but all the time. “Our responsibility as citizens is to keep doing our part to build an America we want to see.”

Clinton thanked Barack and Michelle Obama for their “graceful and determined leadership” over the last two terms.

She called on the young population to carry on the fight despite her setback on election day.

“To the young people in particular I have spent my entire adult life fighting for what I believe in. I have had successes and setbacks, many of them painful. This loss hurts but please don’t stop believing that fighting for what's right is worth it. It is worth it. We need you to keep up these fight now and for the rest of your lives.”

The Democratic party's presidential hopeful said she was proud to be the women’s “champion” in this campaign and despite not being able to break the “highest and hardest glass ceiling” of the US presidency she believes “someday, someone will”.

Clinton went on to encourage young girls to aim high.

“And to all the little girls who are watching this never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams.”

Finally, she ended with her campaign message of America being stronger together.

“If we stand together and work together with respect for our differences strength in our convictions and love for this nation our best days are still ahead of us”.
