Contradictory reports on Zuma's resignation

South African president Jacob Zuma has agreed to be recalled, with African National Congress officials said to be negotiating the manner in which it is to be communicated.

That was according to the South African Broadcasting Corporation's Tshepo Ikaneng, who cited "authoritative sources".

However, it was followed soon afterwards by a report of the ANC's recently-appointed spokesperson, Pule Mabe, labeling talk that Zuma was to resign as 'fake news'.

Earlier on Monday, the South African National Editors' Forum reportedly warned Mabe "not to infringe on the SABC's right to cover stories it deems important."

That followed Mabe's criticism of the SABC's decision to cover a Sunday press conference by an anti-Zuma group comprised of people claiming to be ANC and South African Communist party members who had announced they would march on the Union buildings in Pretoria the next day to "remove" Zuma from power.

As of 1508 GMT, the US dollar was slightly off its lows of the session, down by 0.64% to 11.9167 versus the South African rand.
