The European Central Bank (ECB) is reportedly considering calling for bond purchases in the region of €50bn per month for at least 12 months.

According to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, the ECB’s executive met on Tuesday to outline the proposal, upon which the 25-member governing council will deliberate on Thursday.

The report added that while the figures and the details could still be modified, the proposal seems to indicate that the ECB is ready to take a more aggressive stance than analysts expected.

The ECB’s proposal suggests that bond purchases could amount to €600bn, while analysts had estimated a quantitative easing programme of about €500bn.
