No interest rate cuts will be needed in 2019 and the US economy is "strong", a top US central bank official said.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the President of the Federal Reserve bank of Philadelphia, Patrick Harker, reportedly conceded that slower economic growth around the world and uncertainty around trade policy had generated downside risks to the outlook.

But he did not see a compelling reason to lower rates due to the apparent strength in the US economy.
