The US central bank needs more time to assess the implications of recent volatility in global financial markets on the US economy, a high-ranking official said.

In an interview with Reuters, the president of the Federal Reserve bank of Dallas, Robert Kaplan, said the omission from the Fed´s policy statement on 27 January that economic risks were "balanced" was significant.

"That is significant. And it should be saying to people (that) we are going to take some time here to understand what is going on," he said.

"I need more time to continue to assess that and I plan to take it."
