German industrial production posts surprise 3.5% rise in January

German industrial production in January rose far more than expected, surging 3.5% on the previous month's fall, according to data released by the federal statistical office on Wednesday.

The figure beat forecasts of a 1.4 - 1.5% rise and compared with a revised fall of 2.4% in December.
