Consumer prices in Germany remained flat as initially estimated in September, while wholesale prices continued to decline, data released on Tuesday showed.

According to Destatis, the country’s statistical office, consumer price inflation declined from 0.2% in August to zero in September, in line with the provisional results published on 29 September.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices declined 0.2% in September compared with a flat rate of growth in the previous month.

The report attributed low inflation to a 9.3% decline in energy prices, as core inflation, which strips out energy prices, stood at 1.1% last month.

Prices of goods declined 1.3%, while cost of services and food prices both rose 1.1%.

Meanwhile, the harmonised index of consumer prices dropped 0.3% month-on-month in September, sliding 0.2% on a year-on-year basis compared with a 0.1% gain in each of the previous three months.

A separate report from Destatis showed wholesale continued to decline in September, falling 0.6% month-on-month in September compared with an 0.8% decline in August.

On a year-on-year basis, wholesale prices tumbled 1.8% last month compared with a 1.1% decline in August.
