The House of Lords voted down the government's Brexit bill in its current form.

The Brexit bill was rejected by 358 votes to 256.

Peers backed the amendment proposed by Labour requiring Westminster to introduce proposals within three months of triggering Article 50, to ensure EU citizens enjoy the same residence rights after Brexit.

Nonetheless, while the bill will now return to the House of Commons, MPs - who had already given their backing without any amendments - have the power to overturn the decision.

Ministers say the amendment is a key one, but must be a part of a larger deal to protect UK citizens abroad.

Critics argue that not securing such rights would be akin to Britain shooting itself in the foot, both from a human standpoint if not simply from one of economic self-interest.
