A devastating hurricane has rampaged its way through the Carribean, leaving tens of thousands of people displaced in Haiti, and is set to head towards Cuba and the USA in the coming days.

Reports suggest that 11 people have been killed by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, although it has been difficult for authorities to ascertain exact figures given the devastation to transport links in the area.

The hurricane brought winds of up to 145mph to the region, just six years after an earthquake left 1.5m people in the country homeless.

"What we know is that many, many houses have been damaged," said the country's interior minister, François Anick Joseph. "Some lost rooftops and they'll have to be replaced while others were totally destroyed."

The hurricane has also affected areas of Cuba, but reports would suggest that the impact is not as severe.

The storm caused the collapse of the main bridge link between Port-au-Prince and the southern region of the country.

Fears are increasing that Haiti's cholera crisis will be accentuated as a result of Matthew, with up to 27,000 current suspected cases.

Haiti prime minister Perry Christie admits that he and government is worried by the disaster. "We’re worried because we do not control nature," he said.
