Industrial prices declined in Italy at the start of the year, weighed down in particular by the drop in prices on goods sold domestically.

The country's industrial price index registered a fall of 0.7% month-on-month and were 2.5% below those of a year ago, according to ISTAT, the country's statistics office.

Versus December 2015 the price of goods sold domestically declined by 0.8% - led by a 2.5% decrease in energy prices - and those sold abroad by another 0.4%.

Within the latter, the prices of goods sold in the Eurozone retreated by 0.2% and those sold outside the single currency area by another 0.4%.

In terms of quarterly rates of change industrial prices fell by 1.2% in the latest three month period.
