Los Angeles looks set to host the 2028 Summer Olympic games after city officials reached an agreement with the International Olympic Committee.

The deal will now push the 2024 games towards the French capital of Paris, after both cities had originally bid for that summer’s event.

The Los Angeles Organising Committee said on Monday it had signed a contract with the IOC, which would see it receive £1.8bn in return for stepping aside from the 2024 bidding process.

Following Rio de Janeiro’s often calamitous hosting of the Olympics in 2020, bids for the mammoth sporting event have dried up, with the organising committees attempting to confirm the hosts of both the 2024 and 2028 version in the coming weeks.

Tokyo will host the 2020 games as the world’s best athletes converge on the Japanese capital for the festival of sport.

“This is an historic day for Los Angeles,” LA mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement.

“L.A. 2028 will kick-start our drive to make L.A. the healthiest city in America, by making youth sports more affordable and accessible than ever before.”
