The latest poll from the New York Times/CBS News has shown that US citizens are highly unhappy with the state of their country's politics as Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton fight a particularly grim presidential election.

Neither the Republican or Democrat candidate has covered themselves in glory during their respective campaigns, and voters have expressed a high degree of uncertainty over whether either can unite the country when elected to the Oval Office.

In the latest figures Clinton currently leads Trump by three percentage points by 45% to 42%, with alternative candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein making up the numbers.

But the alarming figure of 82% of voters who feel more "disgusted" than "excited" by the race may be the most striking of the new survey from the New York Times and CBS News.

A commanding advantage among women and non-white voters has appeared to help Clinton stave off late pressure from the Republican in the last pre-election poll from the publications.

The poll also includes figures which gauge voters' opinions about how united the Republican and Democratic parties are.

It found that 85% of Republican voters think that the GOP is divided, while only 25% of Democrat voters think the same of their party.

Millions of citizens have already voted so far in the run-up to the election, while the nominees campaign hard in the final few days in an attempt to win over hearts and minds.
