A woman in her 40's was killed and another injured when a van crashed into two bus shelters in the French city of Marseille on Monday, according to French police.

The driver of the car was arrested although the source told Reuters that his motives were not yet clear.

The van first crashed at approximately 09:15 at Croix Rouge in the 13th district, and then again at about 10:00 at Valentine in the 11th district; however, French prosecutors said the case was not being treated as a terrorist incident.

French media reports said that the driver was known to police and had mental health problems as well as a criminal record, but not known to the intelligence service, wrote the BBC.

The public were advised to avoid the city's Old Port district, The Independent reported.
