Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has said that 91% of last-minute betting on the US presidential election has gone towards Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Democrat Hillary Clinton maintains a slender lead in most of the major polls, but the gap is becoming narrower by the day.

The figures revealed on Thursday that both the number and volume of bets placed at the bookmakers were heavily in favour of the New York businessman. About €100,000 has been gambled this week on the race, with the crucial election day now only four days away.

A spokesperson for the company said that the shock of the Brexit vote in the UK referendum in June is still weighing on people's thoughts.

"This election's been a serious betting anomaly," said Paddy Power's Feilim Mac An Iomaire. "You don't normally see so much placed on the outside candidate but I think the shock of Brexit is fresh in people's minds."

Financial markets have also provided a variety of indicators towards the increased likelihood of a Trump victory.

The Mexican Peso has fallen 3% in the last week since FBI director James Comey revealed the discovery of new emails which were relevant to an investigation into former Secretary of State Clinton.
