Private sector payrolls in the States increased at a slightly quicker than expected pace in July, the results of a closely-followed survey revealed.

According to consultancy ADP, payrolls grew by 156,000 in July (consensus: 150,000) following an upwardly revised increase of 112,000 for June.

Hiring in services accounted for the bulk of the gains, growing by 146,000, led by 44,000 new hires in professional and business services and 37,000 in the education and health space.

Goods producing industries meanwhile added 9,000 new positions, with a 15,000 jump in construction more than offsetting a decline of 6,000 in mining and natural resources.

Private sector hiring in June was originally reported at up by 102,000.
