Republican senators blast Trump as 'dangerous'

US President Donald Trump has come under intense criticism from senators within his own Republican party, one of which accused him of being "dangerous to democracy".

Trump has faced constant difficulties thus far during his presidency from within his own party, with major legislation coming unstuck despite the GOP holding a majority in both houses of Congress.

Arizona senator Jeff Flake had particularly tough words for the former reality television show host, as he announced he would not seek re-election next year.

“We must never meekly accept the daily sundering of our country – the personal attacks, the threats against principles, freedoms, and institutions, the flagrant disregard for truth or decency, the reckless provocations, most often for the pettiest and most personal reasons,” Flake said.

"When such behavior emanates from the top of our government, it is something else: It is dangerous to a democracy," he added.

Chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee Bob Corker has been consistently outspoken in his criticism of the President, and continued on that path in a speech on Tuesday.

“He’s obviously not going to rise to the occasion as President,” said Corker.

Corker and Trump have been embroiled in a public spat via social media site Twitter for several weeks. The Wyoming senator has also said he will not run for office again next year.

“I don’t know why he lowers himself to such a low, low standard and debases our country in the way that he does.”
