The US President-elect's advisers shortlisted Steven Mnuchin to become the next US Treasury Secretary, Bloomberg reported.

Mnuchin was Donald Trump's national campaign finance chairman and stood out as one of the few Wall Street veterans who did not shy away from the candidate early in the election.

An ex-Goldman Sachs banker, Mnuchin was credited by some for giving Trump access to the Republican National Committee's fundraising infrastructure.

Some observers describe the ex-banker as a versatile person in his thinking, well-versed in spotting a good opportunity.

He attended Yale University, in New Haven Connecticut, one of the most prestigious in the US, and was reportedly a member of the Skull and Bones secret society.

After leaving Goldman Sachs - where his father was also a trader - in 2002 the banker worked at two hedge funds, under Eddie Lampert and George Soros, before going on to found his own in 2004, Dune Capital Management.

Intriguingly, Dune was among those sued by Trump over a deal to build a skyscraper in Chicago.

Among Mnuchin's ventures were the acquistion of a film library, together with Soros, from DreamWorks, and film-financing more generally, including Hollywood blockbuster Avatar.

Mnuchin was also successful during the past financial crisis, having lined up investors in 2008 to bid $1.6bn for failed lender IndyMac; it was sold in 2015 for $3.4bn.
