US president-elect Donald Trump has claimed that if the election was based on the popular vote, he would have scored a more comprehensive victory over Hillary Clinton.

In a series of tweets released by the Republican on Tuesday, Trump said that he would have campaigned differently and the system would have allowed him to gain even more votes.

Protests have erupted across the US as many are unhappy with the outcome of the election, considering that Clinton came out on top in the popular vote, gaining more votes nationally than Trump.

"If the election were based on total popular vote I would have campaigned in N.Y. Florida and California and won even bigger and more easily," Trump wrote.

The former reality television star added that the electoral college voting system, which has come under fire since his victory, was a "genius" way of calculating votes.

"The Electoral College is actually genius in that it brings all states, including the smaller ones, into play. Campaigning is much different!"

However, the incoming president had previously expressed anger towards the electoral college, lamenting it in 2012 after Barack Obama was defeated by Mitt Romney, referring to it as a "disaster for democracy".
