Gary Cohn, Donald Trump’s key economic adviser, could be on the way out of the administration as the two men’s relationship begins to sour, Reuters reported on Friday.

A raft of top officials have left the White House in recent months for a variety of reasons as Donald Trump struggles to maintain cohesion in his government.

Cohn, a former Wall Street banker, could be the latest to be forced out after he fell out of favour as a potential successor to Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen.

According to Reuters, several sources close to the White House have raised questions about how long Cohn will remain in his position.

Trump had previously earmarked Cohn to take over from Yellen when her term expires next February.

"The calculus has shifted for Gary. He’s gone, essentially, from untouchable to possibly being bounced out," the source said.

"The message is clear that suddenly Cohn’s job in the White House has real downside risk."

Cohn recently criticised Trump for his response to the Charlottesville violence which erupted following a white supremacist rally last month.
