Donald Trump's personal charity foundation is to be the subject of an inquiry by New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman, according to the Guardian.

The investigation is alleged to concern an illegal contribution made to Florida attorney general Pam Bondi, who decided against investigating Trump University.

In an interview with CNN on Tuesday, Schneidermann said: "We have been concerned that the Trump Foundation may have engaged in some impropriety."

Trump is the Republican candidate for the upcoming presidential election in the United States, and his campaign team has claimed that the inquiry is being made for political reasons.

Senior communications adviser for his campaign, Jason Miller, said in a statement that "Schneidermann is a partisan hack who has turned a blind eye to the Clinton Foundation for years and has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president".

"This is nothing more than a leftwing hitjob designed to distract from Crooked Hillary Clinton's disastrous week," the statement added.

The Donald J Trump Foundation has faced consistent allegations over mishandling donations and using contributions for Trump's personal use.
